2010 is a year of new beginnings and lifestyle changes. It should also be a time for us to reflect on our history and how far we’ve come. February is observed as Black History Month, however we should celebrate our heritage 365. One thing my family does every month is acknowledge/celebrate the life of an African American who has fought for our freedom/civil rights. This is not limited to the people who have made history, but also our own ancestors. If you live in the metropolitan area there are lots of things you can do and places to visit. Here is a list of attractions to check out not only this month but also year around:

Visit the National Museum of American History to get a glimpse of Black Washington through the lens of African-American photographer Addison Scurlock.

The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture is one of the largest African American museums on the east coast. Located in downtown Baltimore, this museum has some of the greatest permanent and temporary exhibitions in the US. Some of them include: Freedom Sisters, Graphic works by Romare Bearden, and Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow: Jewish Refugee Scholars at Black Colleges.

Another great place to visit is the Frederick Douglass-Issac Myers Maritime Park. Located in historical Fells Point, this one of the many places a young Fredrick Douglass frequented as a child and a place where Southern Blacks came seeking housing and employment.
